Shelby SuperCars Aero EV: 0-60 mph in 2.5s:

Electric cars are no joke. Yes, it’s true that many EVs are small, ungainly-looking oddities, but the other end of the spectrum—the realm of high-performance supercars—might surprise you.

After re-discovering a 1972 electric datsun that can accelerate from 0-60 in 3 seconds, we decided that an important question hadn’t really been answered yet: how do the electric cars we’ve been hearing so much about stack up in terms of performance?

The Aero EV debuted mid-2008 with some shocking statistics: a twin motor AESP producing 1,000 hp, 60 mph in a mere 2.5 seconds, and a top speed of 208 mph.

Shelby SuperCars already holds the distinction for the world’s fastest production car, the 2009 SSC Ultimate Aero (270 mph). While some of the claims for the new Aero EV seem outlandish, such as a 10 minute charge-time on a standard 110 outlet and a 150-200 mile range on a single charge, this doesn’t stop it from being the king of this list of high-performance machines.

Lamborghini hybrid coming in 2015, next-gen models available with either AWD or RWD:

Following closely in the footsteps of its rival from Maranello, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann has confirmed in an interview with German Automobilewoche magazine that the Italian purveyor of high-end supercars is working on a hybrid Gallardo. Not surprisingly, the electrically assisted Bull is expected to hit the market in 2015 – the same year as the upcoming fuel-saving Ferrari.
In contrast to the recently announced fully electric SLS Gullwing from Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini's eco-friendly efforts won't include replacing the traditional gasoline powerplant completely. Instead, Winkelmann suggests that a small electric motor would be used solely to get the car moving at low speeds, after which either the expected V10 or V12 engine would kick the fun into high gear.
Worry not, Lambo fans – there's no chance the company will lose focus on its high performance roots. In fact, the boys at Inside Line report that both the Gallardo and Murcièlago lines are destined to receive dedicated track-ready Balboni-style rear-wheel drive models to augment the automaker's already amazingly capable all-wheel drive supercars.

Lotus Eagle cool car:

Lotus has released the first image and all the details on its new coupe ahead of its unveiling at the London Motor Show next week. A 3.5-liter Toyota V6 mounted amidships, producing 276 hp and 250 lb.-ft. of torque will power the new 2+2. Performance estimates are sketchy right now, but assuming Lotus holds with tradition and keeps the pounds off, the 0-60 time should be below five seconds, with a top speed approaching 160 mph.
While it's still not clear if the new Lotus will carry an Eagle badge at its debut, it will be packing an extra set of "Isofix" seats behind the front seat passengers that can accommodate children up to nine years old or cast members from the Cirque du Soleil. Thankfully, there will be an option to convert the rear seats into a storage compartment.
Inside the leather-lined cabin, drivers get to enjoy amenities previously thought frivolous on the Elise/Exige, including storage bins, cup holders, blue LED lighting, air conditioning, traction control, tire pressure monitoring and a Alpine stereo with a seven-inch screen, Bluetooth connectivity and iPod connections.
Sales will be limited to around 2000 units per year when the Eagle hits dealers in the spring of 2009, with an approximate sticker of £45,000. A convertible version and a high-performance variant are also planned, and according to sources, the Eagle is considerably faster than the Elise around the Nurburgring and more planted at speed than the Exige.

The Eagle is part of the automaker's effort to broaden its appeal, and that will also include two new models due out in October of 2011.

Nissan shows off latest electric car prototype with battery monitoring system, iPhone app:

Nissan's started showing off its latest prototype electric car, based on the Versa. This one will house a 108 horsepower / 206 pound-feet electric motor to drive the front wheels, and a 24 kWh, lithium ion battery pack will be fitted under the floor for storing electricity, with an expected range of 100 miles. To top things of nerd-style, the newest prototype will have a navigation system which will show the current life of the battery, and the mile range its current amount of juice will support, and will boast the ability to download info about nearby charging station locations. And need we say, "there's an app for that?" That's right, Nissan also has a working prototype of an iPhone app making the rounds in Japan which would allow users to communicate with their car remotely and find out the state of the battery's charge. Can this get any cooler?

2009 Motor Trend Car of the Year Winner: Nissan GT-R Ichiban: (a) Number One (b) The Best (c) First Place (d) Winner (e) All of the Above:

we are fully aware of the GT-R's best-known nickname, "Godzilla" -- so called because the automotive press found previous generations as ferocious and all-conquering as Japan's fire-breathing monster. But following a full week of intensive evaluation in Nissan's new sports car, we here at Motor Trend now lay claim to a more suitable GT-R moniker -- Ichiban. From Japanese, ichiban translates to "number one." In Motor Trendvernacular, however, it simply denotes: 2009 Car of the Year.Every September, it seems a few editors comment, "This is the toughest field I can remember." Sure enough, as this year's testing drew to a close, several staff members expressed those same sentiments. And for sound reason-the competitive set is more imposing than Jamaica's Olympic track team. From the jumbo-shrimp Honda Fit and the discount-Lexus Hyundai Genesis to the quicker-than-a-CaymanBMW 1 series and the cat's-meow Jaguar XF, this year's pool runs deeper than any of recent memory. Yet, no contender proved as profound, awe-inspiring, or, more important, able to fulfill our criteria as the GT-R. How did Nissan so competently clinch the calipers?

Read on.

The most expensive cars of the year Average price of top 10 rides on list up to $351,000:

Revolutions in the auto industry are few and far between, so this year we are not surprised to report that the most expensive automobiles are, again, sports cars. A couple of premium sedans appear here and there in the slide show that follows — a slide show that features our annual list of the ten most expensive cars available in the United States.

The average price of a vehicle on the list has gone up to $351,000 from $341,000, an increase of 3 percent. Automakers increase the prices of blueblood automobiles to hedge against inflation, to compensate for disappointing sales or because they have added new features to the cars.

Sometimes the price increases seem like highway robbery. Saleen's S7, this year's most expensive car, costs $120,000 more than it did last year. According to Manhattan Motorcars, Saleen's New York dealer, the price hike is due to modifications to the S7's V-8 engine, whose horsepower is now up to 575 from 550. Assume for argument's sake that's the only reason for the extra $120K on the sticker, and we're talking about a cost of about $5,000 for each additional unit of horsepower. If Honda Motor charged $5,000 per horse, a high-end Civic would cost about $800,000.

Ascari A10 Super Car:

The first serious answer from Ferrari FXX comes from a pretty unexpected direction: the British producer ASCARI.ASCARI was born in 1995, in Dorset and only recently has managed to make an important entrance on the supercar market with model KZ1. A10 has the pretence to be the fastest car in the circuit, among the homologated cars for street use. This is an affirmation not exactly that easy to sustain, considering that monsters like Veyron and also extra-light cars like Ariel Atom are also homologated for street use.But it seems that the officials at ASCARI are very sure of their statements. After that, the same officials come and bring it a step further by saying that A10 can have on the circuit extremely close to an FFX time. Pretty amazing, huh?The car is entirely hand built in Branbury, it weighs around 1200 kg, being mostly built from carbon and aluminium fibre and having an engine of 625 HP. So, until now, not very spectacular.
But the start up is simply incredible: 0-100 in 2.8 seconds and 0-160 km/h in under 6 seconds. How is it possible to obtain such times with such report mass/power? It's very likely that the transmission may be a real engineering masterpiece.Ascari A10 is much stronger than a KZ1, the modified parts going from new body panels to a new engine and transmission plus a brake modified system capable to absorb the extra power. There will be produced only 10 units, at a price of 520 000euro. If it seems too much, think about the fact that an Enzo FXX costs 1.5 million Euro and is restrictioned at circuit use.
