The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model

Innovative approach and optical expression of creative freedom. The key to affecting the development of tomorrow’s mobility lies in our readiness to challenge what is established and in the ability to present new options. In order to meet these objectives, BMW Group Design taps into the potential of the GINA principle (Geometry and Functions In “N” Adaptions) which promotes innovative thinking by allowing maximum freedom of crea-tivity. GINA produces dramatically different solutions that affect the design and functionality of future cars. The GINA Light Visionary Model is an optical expression of selective, future-oriented concepts which provide an example of the manner and extent of this transformation. BMW Group Design is not just interested in answering the question of how the car of the future will look but primarily wishes to explore the creative freedom it has to offer. Both of these aspects are affected by the requirements that future cars are expected to meet. All ideas that the GINA Light Visionary Model presents are therefore derived from the needs and demands of customers concerning the aesthetic and functional characteristics of their car and their desire to express individuality and lifestyle. The GINA Light Visionary Model has an almost seamless outer skin, a flexible textile cover that stretches across a moveable substructure. Individual functions are only revealed if and when they are needed. With this model, BMW Group Design initiates a fundamental discourse about the characteristics that will affect the development of cars in future. It is therefore fundamentally different from concept cars, which reflect what is expected of them by implementing as many elements as possible in a future production model. In contrast, the GINA Light Visionary Model is a vision of future cars and serves as an object of research. The seamless car body of the GINA Light Visionary Model. Putting its visions of tomorrow’s car into practice, BMW Group Design has developed a two-seater roadster with the unique dynamic proportions that are typical of its brand.
The GINA Light Visionary Model takes the sculptural design that has already been established by a number of production cars to a new, unparalleled conclusion. The car’s front and sides, including the doors, create one single uninterrupted, seamless whole that converges to form an optical as well as a structural unit. In order to create this appearance, it was necessary to move beyond all previous conceptions of car body configuration, design and materials. Therefore, the GINA Light Visionary Model has dispensed with the usual body elements found on production vehicles such as front apron, bonnet, side panels, doors, wheel arches, roof, trunk lid and rear deck. Instead, a new structure with a minimum amount of components has taken their place. A special, highly durable and extremely expansion-resistant fabric material stretches across a metal structure. This new material offers designers a significantly higher level of freedom of design and functionality. The body consists of only four elements. The largest component extends from the front of the vehicle to the edge of the windscreen and down the sides to the rear edge of the doors. The large side panels start at the front where the rocker panels emerge and run across the rear wheel arches into the rear. The fourth component is the central rear deck element.

MG Rover MG6 Concept Based on Roewe 550 to Debut in Shanghai

Having already announced the Roewe N1 Concept, China's Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) that owns the rights to the MG Rover brand, revealed that its 2009 Shanghai Auto Show booth will also host the world premiere of the MG6 Concept. The five-door liftback model is based on the underpinnings of the Roewe 550 which was designed as SAIC's successor to the Rover 45.
Although details are still sketchy, the MG6 will most likely lead to a production version that might very well find its way into Europe where MG Rover already sells the resurrected TF LE500 in the U.K.
Powertrain options for the MG6 will be identical to those offered in the Roewe 550 including a 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine.

Acura ZDX Sporty Crossover Concept Revealed at New York Show

Meet the Acura ZDX concept, or shall we say, a very close to production version of the Japanese firm's forthcoming crossover that is due to go on sale in the States in the fall of 2009. While most of us were questioning BMW's decision to add the X6 in its lineup, the Honda folks quickly picked up the idea and came up with their own four-door coupe crossover - we know, it sounds ridiculous...
"The ZDX is truly a luxury performance coupe - plus," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "The emotional coupe styling coupled with a luxurious and dramatic interior and surprising versatility, allows the ZDX to define its own segment and attract an entirely new customer."
While we wouldn't actually fall in love with its exterior styling, we must admit that Acura's designers seem to have done a better job than their Bavarian counterparts. An interesting detail are the hidden rear door handles that are concealed in the C-pillar. Aside from a few minor details such as the headlamp and tail light housings, the exhaust tail pipes and quite possibly, the front bumper, don't expect to see other differences on the production model.
At 192.4 inches or 4887mm long, the ZDX prototype is less than two inches longer than the MDX (190.7 in.) but nearly 12 inches longer than the RDX (180.7 in. or 4590 mm). However, with a height of 61.8 inches, it's also around 7 and 4-inches respectively lower than its two crossover siblings.
Inside, the five-seater ZDX is virtually production ready though don't expect to see the hand-stitched leather dashboard and the two-tone trim, or at least not in the basic versions of the crossover. The prototype's cabin also features a panoramic glass roof which runs the entire length of the vehicle.
Acura said that this fall's production version of the ZDX will be powered by a V6 engine mated to an all-new, 6-speed automatic transmissio that drives all four-wheels through Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system.
ZDX Prototype Dimensions:
Length: 192.4 inches
Width: 78.5 inches
Height: 61.8 inches
Wheelbase: 108.2 inches
Wheel/tire: 9-spoke custom alloy wheels with Michelin Latitude HP 275/40ZR 20 tires
Powertrain: All-aluminum VTEC V-6, all-new 6-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD)
Seating capacity: 5-passenger

Geely to show updated GT Concept in Shanghai, Production Version may follow shortly

One of the most talked about concept cars at last year's Beijing motorshow, the Geely GT (where GT stands for "Geely Tiger") is making a comeback at next month's Shanghai auto salon. The Chinese automaker said in a statement that the positive reviews from the American press have "forced" the company to seriously consider building a production version of the coupe and for this reason, they have updated the concept by adding an interior and Lamborghini-style scissor doors as well as solving around 90 percent of the engineering problems - whatever that means.

Geely at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show: The Full Monty

Just as it did at last year's Beijing Auto Show, Chinese automaker Geely is preparing to exhibit a mind-boggling -for Western carmaker standards - 22 production cars and concept studies at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show which runs from April 20 to 28. Aside from the closer-to-production GT concept and the Phantom-clone GE luxury limousine, the Chinese automaker's stand will host a variety of cars ranging from the all-electric EK2 and the IG mini to the Honda Ridegline-like ET925 four-door pickup truck and the GV515 minivan.

Back to the Future: Lamborghini 350 GT and 400 GT

Our classic car tribute continues this time with a more upscale and exclusive sportscar, Lamborghini's first ever production model, the 350 GT / 400 GT. Story has it that back in the early 1960s, Feruccio Lamborghini was so disgruntled with his personal Ferraris that he decided to build his own line of supercars. At the time, most thought that Lamborghini was foolish to even think that he could rival Ferrari but the strong-willed Italian who had amassed a large fortune through his successful Lamborghini-branded tractors as well as from other businesses, was to prove them wrong.

Mirror Shiny Bugatti Veyron 16.4 up for sale in Abu Dhabi

Unless it's some kind of custom creation, we pretty sure that the shiny-shiny Bugatti Veyron 16.4 that's pictured here is the extremely rare 'Pur Sang' edition that was revealed at the Frankfurt Auto Show back in 2007. We've added a set of official pics of the original 'Pur Sang' after the jump so you can compare for yourselves. All in all, Bugatti had produce a mere five examples of the shiny supercar that sported an unpainted, all-aluminum body shell combined with numerous carbon fiber parts (bonnet, roof, rear spoiler etc.

Mitsubishi says yes to U.S. market launch of all-electric i MiEV RWD microcar

Ending the speculative rumors that had been circulating for quite a while now, Mitsubishi officially confirmed at its New York Auto Show press conference that the fully-electric i MiEV microcar will be arriving on U.S. shores. The pure electric, four-passenger i MiEV is scheduled to go on sale in Japan this July with Europe following suit in 2010 and the U.S. shortly after that. The tiny i MiEV, which is slightly smaller than a Fiat 500 measuring 3.395mm or 133.6-in. in length, is based on the Japanese market, rear-engined 'i' minicar.
The electric version replaces the i's conventional gasoline engine, transmission and fuel tank with a lithium-ion battery system, electric motor and onboard charging system. However, it retains the standard i's rear mid-ship architecture which allowed Mitsubishi to integrate the new components under the seats, luggage compartment and floor deck.
The i MiEV's battery pack can be charged either from an 110v outlet - which takes around 12 to 14 hours - or half that time on a 220v. Additionally, there is a fast charge connector that allows the battery to reach 80 percent of capacity in just 30 minutes.
We're not aware of the exact specifications of the U.S. market model, but it is most likely that the vehicle will undergo certain changes to 'fit' (feel free to share your thoughts on this one...) the needs of the American market.

Shanghai Curiosities: Changan Motors e301 Crossover Concept

It appears that this year's Shanghai Auto Show, which open its gates for the public on April 22, will be packed with myriads of weird looking concept cars demonstrating the dynamic of China's rapidly growing automobile industry. It also looks like that in order to keep up with the fad, we'll be 'forced' to invigorate our automotive dictionary with new car brands such as Changan Motors that has issued the first photos of its e301 subcompact crossover.
Not surprisingly, Changan Motors is being secretive about the e301 and what it represents for the company. We'd go for nothing aside from spicing up the firm's Shanghai Show stand, but you all know how automakers come up with a nice story on every-single concept they create, so we'll wait to hear Changan's official take on the e301.

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe and Cabriolet Facelift Models Spied

Having already introduced the facelift versions of the 911 Carrera, Carrera S, Targa and GT3, Porsche's development team is now concentrating on the 911 Turbo Coupe and Convertible models of the 997 range. Spotted here by our spy photographers with minimal camouflage, the new 997 Turbos will be distinguished on the outside by the restyled LED tail lamps, the beefier exhaust pipes and the newly styled alloy wheels. While the cosmetic changes are extremely subtle, as with all refreshed 997 models, the big news for the Turbo is under the bonnet.
Carscoop sources state that like the rest of the updated 997s, the range-topping 911's turbocharged flat-six engine will benefit from a new direct-injection system that will help increase output from 480HP to more than 500HP and at the same time, reduce consumption and CO2 emissions by nearly 15 percent.
There's also talk of a modified version of Porsche's all-new PDK seven-speed double-clutch transmission that should shave off a couple of tenths of a second in the 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint. Expect to see the facelifted 911 Turbo Coupe and Convertible arriving in showrooms during the second half of the year.

New 2009 Dodge Challenger - Price, Photos, Reviews & Features

Fast is back. After resurrecting the legendary muscle car in 2008, Dodge is adding more trim levels so that you can quench your thirst for speed. Young and old alike will appreciate the raw American power of the 2009 Dodge Challenger.

One great thing about the new Challenger is the variety of engine options. Last year the Challenger was only available in one trim—the premium SRT8. Two new trims, SE and R/T give consumers more options without sacrificing too much power. The SE has a 3.5-liter, 250-horsepower V-6 yielding 250 lb-ft torque. The R/T has a 5.7-liter, 372-horsepower HEMI® V-8 5-speed AutoStick automatic transmission with 400 lb-ft of torque. The R/T is also available in a 5.7-liter, 375-horsepower 6-speed manual transmission with 410 lb-ft of torque. If that is too soft for you, then opt for the tire-smoking 6.1-liter, 425-horsepower HEMI® V-8 SRT8 rocket with a 5-speed AutoStick transmission and 420 lb-ft or torque. Not known for its fuel economy, the Challenger isn’t as bad as one would think with 13-17 MPG in the city and 19-25 MPG on the highway.

No matter which trim you go for, there’s no getting around the Challenger’s menacing, retro style. Based off of the original style of the 1970 Challenger, the dual round headlamps, performance hood, menacing grille, 17, 18 and 20-inch wheels and signature full-width taillamp blend old-school muscle with a modern look. Where the Challenger competes with the Ford Mustang, it actually bears a striking resemblance to the Chevy Camaro. An independent front and rear suspension with anti-roll bars and a sport-tuned suspension setup make the Challenger a tight around curves.

Safety features include massive ventilated Brembo® four-wheel disc brakes with an Anti-lock Braking system and Brake Assist. Standard dual front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and dual curtain airbags offer excellent protection in a collision. Standard Traction Control helps to prevent excessive wheelspin in slippery conditions.

Unlike its barbaric muscle car ancestors, the new Challenger features a host of useful modern amenities. The available Uconnect system handles everything from music, GPS, phone/Bluetooth, satellite radio and internet connectivity. An optional 6-disc in-dash CD player with SIRIUS® Satellite Radio, MP3 capability, DVD-audio, and 13 Kicker® speaker, 520-watt sound system might actually be louder than the engine.

Dust off that AC/DC vinyl or simply find the classic rock station on the satellite radio and feel the rumble of youth, power and retro styling. Feel the power of the 2009 Dodge Challenger.

2010 Kia Forte Koup makes Global Debut in NY: 60-High Res Photos

Continuing its long-term assault on the market, Kia blew the covers off the production version of the Koup concept that was unveiled during last year's New York Auto Show. The Korean automaker's first-ever two door coupe model is based on the new Forte Sedan with which it shares the mechanical hardware as well as the interior design. On the outside, it's another story as Kia has come up with a sharp looking design featuring a lower stance and a series of unique styling cues that differentiate the Koup from the sedan.
And while it's evident that the Kia's small coupe bears a few design similarities with Honda's European Civic hatchback (front) as well as from the Acura RSX (rear), overall, the 2010 Forte Koup looks pretty neat.
"On the heel of the introductions of the Soul and Forte sedan, Forte Koup represents the next exciting step in the transformation of Kia design and offers a blend of sporty and emotional appeal," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing, KMA. "We believe our new design evolution coupled with standard Kia value and safety features will continue to attract customers to the Kia brand."
Built on the Forte sedan's front-wheel drive platform, the Koup comes with a wheelbase of 104.3 inches, an overall length of 176.4 inches, an overall width of 69.5 inches and overall height of 55.1 inches, meaning that it's slightly shorter in length and height than its four-door counterpart.
Like the Forte sedan, the Koup will be offered with two four-cylinder gasoline engines, a 2.4-liter unit for the EX model producing 156 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque and a 2.4-liter unit for the SX that delivers 173 horsepower and 168 pound-feet of torque.
Both models are available with two transmission options, a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission for the 2.0L EX, and a standard six-speed manual transmission and an optional five-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic for the 2.4L SX.
Kia said that the 2.0-liter engine offers 25mpg city and 34 mpg highway with either tranmssion while the more powerful 2.4-liter engine is rated at 22mpg city and 32 mpg highway with the six-speed manual and 23/31 mpg when paired with the five-speed automatic transmission.
Sales in the U.S. are expected to start later in the year.

Aston Martin Rapide: High-Resolution Photos of Production Model

As many of you petrol-heads may remember, late last year and in early 2009, various British magazines published an array of photos depicting the production version of Aston Martin's highly anticipated Rapide sports sedan. Well, we happened to find official, high-resolution versions of those images and so here we are to share them with you.
When compared to the Rapid concept study that was unveiled three years ago at the 2006 Detroit motorshow, the photos / CGIs of the production model reveal that Aston Martin hasn't altered the sports sedan's basic design in any way.
In fact, the only visible changes concern a few minor styling tweaks such as the stronger crease that runs from the front wing vent through both doors, the retouched rear bumper, the more production-like exterior mirrors and the new front apron that does away with the secondary air intakes.
Power for the Rapide is said to be provided by a 6.0-liter V12 engine developing somewhere around 500HP. Tempting, but when will we actually see Aston Martin's 10x-better looking Porsche Panamera rival hitting the streets? According to earlier statements from Aston Martin's execs, the Rapide should be revealed in production form in late 2009, most likely at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with sales commencing in early 2010.

Alfa Romeo MiTo Veloce: Sub-GTA model with 180HP Debuts at AutoRAI

If there's one thing we don't like about the Fiat Group, it's their notorious incapability of keeping the press informed with their latest actions. Such is the case with the Alfa Romeo MiTo Veloce that made its world premiere at the AutoRAI show in Holland. Other than these photos that were shot by our friends over at Autoblog.nl and some scattered information, there's nothing official on the car. Unofficially, it is said that the Veloce, which supposedly fits between the 155HP 1.4 TB model and the forthcoming 240HP GTA, is powered by a 180HP variant of the firm's 1.4-liter turbo engine.
Other mechanical improvements on the MiTo Veloce include an upgraded suspension and beefier brakes.
As you can see in the photos, the Veloce features a subtle bodykit consisting of a front lip spoiler, side skirts, white-color mirror caps and a roof spoiler. The looks are rounded off with the multispoke alloy wheels finished in white. Inside, the MiTo Veloce comes with a set of sport seats and aluminum pedals and trim.

2010 BMW X5 to Receive Subtle Facelift

As well as preparing the first-ever "M" version of the X5 that is due to be officially revealed towards the end of the week, BMW is also tweaking the rest of the range of its crossover model. If you're finding it hard to spot the cosmetic changes in our latest spy photos, we don't blame you as on the outside they are limited to the newly styled front and rear bumpers, the repositioned fog lights plus a different alloy wheel or two - or four if you want to take it literally.
Our Bavarian sources also told us that the 2010 X5 will also benefit from a few minor interior updates including the new trim, some ergonomic optimizations and the addition of some toys to the standard and options list.
In terms of mechanical revisions, it is said that BMW will add to the X5's range the latest version of its 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine that develops 326HP in the 740i (up from 306HP in the 335i and the X6 xDrive35i).

Having already premiered in Canada as well as in Europe at last month's Geneva Show, the 2010 Mazda CX-7 now makes its first appearance in the United States at the New York International Auto Show. The new CX-7 gains a new 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that returns an estimated 28mpg on the highway while the compact crossover also benefits from a 'light' exterior and interior facelift.
Most of the cosmetic changes concern the CX-7's fascia which like it or not, adopts the firm's signature smiley-face lower grille along with a more prominent Mazda badge, reshaped front and rear bumpers and newly designed alloy wheels.
Inside, the 2010 CX-7 features upgraded materials at various locations around the cabin, a new steering wheel with integrated controls for the audio, Bluetoothtelephone and cruise-control, new front and rear door armrests, a fresh multi-function display and a restyled meters for the instrument panel while Mazda also modified the vehicle's double-roof instrument panel.
For 2010, apart from the 244HP 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the CX-7 will also be offered for the first time with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-pot that delivers 161 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 161 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm. Available only with a front-wheel drive layout, the 2.5-liter unit is coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission returning an estimated fuel economy of 21/28 mpg (city/highway).
Mazda's engineers also refined the CX-7's platform by incorporating improvements in body rigidity, lower noise, vibration & harshness (NVH) levels as well as reduced wind noise while the vehicle's suspension was also retuned.

The (Rolls Royce) Phantom of the Hummer

This is so wrong, in so many ways that we've lost count. But admittedly it is comically hilarious. Actually it's probably the most ridiculous transformation of a Hummer we've seen to date. Now, why on earth would someone perform a Rolls Royce Phantom-like face transplant on an Hummer H2 is beyond logical comprehension. We'll just leave it at that...

New 2009 BMW M3 - Price, Photos, Reviews & Features

While rare to find the right balance of sports-car performance and everyday personality, the 2009 BMW M3 succeeds in providing both to today’s luxury driver.
Available in coupe, sedan or retractable-hardtop convertible, the M3 is a high-performance vehicle only needing to be offered in one stylish trim level. It is powered by a high-revving 4.0-liter V-8 engine that produces 414-horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque in rear-wheel drive. With a six-speed manual transmission and a maximum 8,400 rpm, this vehicle really gets its’ motor, and maybe yours as well, running. A seven-speed double-clutch with variable differential lock transmission is optionally available.
Competing head-to-head with the likes of the Audi S5, Chevrolet Corvette and the Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG, the M3 showcases standard 18-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, leather upholstery, and heated power-adjustable sport seats with driver memory. The coupe features a carbon-fiber roof, and all M3s receive an exclusive sport-tuned suspension and limited-slip rear differential. And fuel economy is fairly on-par with its peers, reaching 13-14 MPG city and 20 MPG highway.
Upgrade package options for the M3 add power-folding mirrors, BMW Assist, M Drive (allowing drivers to change throttle response and steering feel), a voice-activated navigation system, keyless ignition and entry and electronically controlled dampers. Single option features provide 19-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof for sedans, rear park assist and an upgraded sound system with HD radio, satellite radio and an iPod adapter available. A redesigned iDrive controller debuts this year for the optional navigation system, which is now hard-drive-based and features real-time traffic.
Standard safety features for the M3 include front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, and high-performance antilock disc brakes with cross-drilled discs, traction control and electronic stability control.
One of the most athletic sports cars on the road today with nearly unsurpassed acceleration and handling, the 2009 BMW M3 will make enthusiasts’ mouths water and everyday drivers excited to see what all the hub-bub is about.

Buick to get 2010 Opel Astra in China

It seems that China has become some kind of paradise for Buick as the brand is getting some of the best products that General Motors has to offer. After the Park Avenue and Regal which are essentially rebadged variants of the Holden Statesman/Caprice and Opel Insignia respectively, it looks like that Buick's Chinese range will also benefit from the addition of the next generation Opel Astra, the first photos of which you can check out here.
These spy pictures from Chinese website Auto Sina show that, just as with the Insignia-based Buick Regal, the only significant difference between the European 2010 Opel Astra hatchback and the Chinese market model will most likely be limited to Buick's family crest and waterfall-style grille.

New 2009 Acura RL - Price, Photos, Reviews & Features

One of the more popular luxury sedans around, the 2009 Acura RL is continually earning its stripes without sacrificing features for the value-conscious new car buyer.

The RL is modestly restyled this year with new front- and rear-end styling and revised suspension tuning. Most evident, however, is a more powerful engine in the form of a 3.7-liter, 300-horsepower V-6 coupled with a quick-responding 5-speed automatic transmission.

Standard manual shift control and Acura’s own Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system, which increases handling and balance across both front and rear or left and right wheels on turns. An optional Technology Package offers a useful navigation system and backup camera, while a Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) package goes one step further with adaptive cruise control.

Posting high marks with the likes of the Infiniti M and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the RL is the automaker’s flagship midsize luxury sedan that continues to gain favorable impressions for everyday pleasing rides and competent handling. While modest 16 MPG city and 22 MPG highway fuel economy isn’t going make a buyer salivate, the RL is on par with those in its class and more than makes up for it with an impressive array of technology accents, high-quality cabin materials and increased interior space.

Attractively crafted with an ever-so-slight redesign, the RL seats up to five passengers and comes beautifully stocked with 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, power and heated front seats with driver memory settings, a sunroof, keyless ignition, Bluetooth connectivity and a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound system with a six-disc CD/DVD-audio changer and satellite radio.

All RLs received 5-star government crash-test ratings on front- and side-impact safety. Antilock disc brakes with assist, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, active front head restraints and a stability control system come standard.

This grouping of RL safety features are furthered by high-intensity-discharge headlights and side mirrors with redundant turn signals. The aforementioned CMBS is a preventive option package that gives driver warnings and applies braking when an emergency situation or collision becomes unavoidable.

The smart choice with a litany of standard and optional features available, the 2009 Acura RL gives consumers maximum value without holding back on the type of luxury that is sure to make bystanders take full notice.

2010 Opel Insignia OPC: Barely Camouflaged Prototype Spied on the 'Ring

What could very well turn out to be an economical alternative to the Audi S4 sports sedan, the new Opel Insignia OPC, was caught here by our spies virtually undisguised during test runs on the Nurburgring race track. The new high-performance Insignia that is due to make its world debut at the Frankfurt motorshow this fall, is powered by a modified version of GM's twin-turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 that is said to crank out somewhere in the range of 300 to 320 horsepower.
And how will the Insignia put all that power on the road, we here some of you ask? Well, for starters, unlike its front-wheel drive Vectra OPC predecessor, the Insignia OPC sports an advance all-wheel drive system. Additionally, from what our sources tell us, the OPC will also feature the Saab 9-3 Turbo X's electronically-controlled, rear limited slip differential (eLSD) which can transfer up to 40% of torque to whichever (rear) wheel has more grip.
Opel's engineers will also spice up the Insignia's brake and steering wheel system as well as the suspension to further improve the car's handling.
On the outside, the high-performance Insignia justifies its OPC moniker with a restyled nose that draws its inspiration from the GTC Concept Coupe plus a new rear bumper that houses a diffuser as well as the twin tailpipes, chunkier side sills, a discreet boot lid spoiler and of course, a new set of alloy wheels shod in beefier tires.
We don't have any shots of the car's interior, but expect to see the same upgrades as with any other OPC model, meaning a sportier trim combined with front bucket seats, a thicker rim for the three-spoke steering wheel and a revised instrument panel.
The new Insignia OPC is due to arrive in Opel and Vauxhall dealerships during the fourth quarter of the year.

My Two Dents on Hyundai's Lexus LS Rival, the Equus

Two words I never would have expected to hear in the same sentence five years ago: Hyundai and luxury. In fact, I would have thought you were a little confused. Well, I guess that's egg on my face. Over the past few years the little Korean automaker-that-could has been turning itself into a powerhouse brand with impressive quality, price points, design, engineering, and performance. The automaker whose dealerships I tried to avoid like the plague only a short time ago now has a lineup that has me wanting to take a second look.
First came the Genesis, a lux-ish sedan that provides a V8 and rear-wheel drive to compete with the big boys from Germany and Japan while undercutting their prices by a wide margin. Then, hot on the Genesis sedan's tail came the Genesis Coupe with its 2.0-liter turbo four or big 300HP+ V6, again offering performance by mating both to a 6-speed stick and RWD.
Finally, just this week in New York Hyundai had their new home-market flagship on the podium, the new Mercedes S-Class sized Equus sedan, you know, just for show (yeah right). No doubt if reactions are good they'll be bringing this puppy across the Pacific to start recruiting Mercedes and Lexus buyers. If prices for the six-cylinder were really to start in the 40k's as rumors suggest, I can imagine a loaded model with the V8 would still come in under most competitors' prices.
I'm not quite sure where Hyundai got the nerve and the skills to leapfrog some of Japan's best attempts at top tier status (Acura and Infiniti, for example), but boldly bearing down on Lexus and Mercedes has definitely gotten consumers' attention. Never in a million years would I have thought that serious people would be comparing Hyundai with manufacturers from the inner circle of luxury.
From the looks of it, the Equus is just the next stage in Hyundai's grand scheme to show people the Japanese aren't the only Asian automotive force to be reckoned with. Having seen its flagship, now I'm (I can't believe I'm saying this) eagerly anticipating the Tiburon's replacement. Mercedes and Lexus, watch your backs. It's looking more and more like Hyundai will be a real contender in the years to come.

2010 Subaru Legacy: Official Details and 32 High-Res Photos

Subaru has lifted the covers on the all-new, 2010 Legacy ahead of the mid-size sedan's world premiere at next week's New York International Auto Show. The production version of the Legacy Concept that was shown in Detroit earlier this year comes with new looks inside and out, a revised engine line-up that includes a new 3.6-liter 6-cylinder boxer and improved space for passengers and their luggage alike.
As was expected, Subaru's designers toned down the Legacy Concept's exterior styling with the production model looking much less aggressive and yes, the car's rear-end does bring to mind the Lexus GS. Inside, the new Legacy has been updated from ground up though Subaru's clientele will most likely feel right at home which isn't a bad thing at all.
The 2010 Legacy is built on a new, larger platform that promises to offer increased room and comfort while preserving the previous model's driving dynamics. The new Legacy is 3.2-in. higher, 1.4-in. longer and 3.6-in. wider than the previous model while the wheelbase grows to 108.3-in., a 3.2-in. increase over the previous model. According to Subaru, the 2010 Legacy provides nearly four inches of additional rear legroom for passengers while the trunk volume has grown from 11.4 to 14.7 cu.ft.
Under the hood, the 2010 Legacy will be offered in the States with three new or revised engines, all combined with Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. The entry level 2.5i model is powered by an updated 2.5-liter normally aspirated four-cylinder boxer that delivers 170HP at 5,600 rpm and 170 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. This engine is matted to a new standard 6-speed manual transmission or the new Lineartronic CVT.
Up next is the 2.5GT models that come with a revised 2.5-liter turbocharged four-pot boxer (based on the Impreza WRX engine) teamed to a new standard 6-speed manual transmission. that is more than 50 pounds lighter than the 6-speed unit used in the 2009 Legacy 2.5GT spec.B. The turbo unit produces 265HP and 258 lb.-ft. of peak torque (compared to 243 hp and 241 lb.-ft. in the previous 2.5GT models) allowing the 2.5GT to accelerate from zero to 60 mph (96km/h) in under six seconds.
Finally we have the new Legacy 3.6R model powered by a new 3.6-liter H6 engine that replaces the previous 3.0-liter H6. The 3.6-liter boxer engine produces 256HP and 247 lb.-ft. of peak torque, compared to 245 hp and 215 lb.-ft. of torque for the previous 3.0-liter unit. This engine is hooked up to a five-speed automatic transmission.
Sales of the new Legacy will begin in the U.S. this summer with prices expected to be similar to the '09 models. The European version of the Legacy that will be offered 2.0-liter gasoline and diesel boxer engines will most likely be unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show in September.

2010 Subaru Outback: 30 High-Res Photos and all the official Details

Making its world debut at the New York International Auto Show alongside the new 2010 Legacy sedan is Subaru's fourth-generation Outback model which is the only other version of the new Legacy that will be heading to the States. Like its sedan counterpart, the Outback is a little bit bigger than its predecessor while it also benefits from the introduction of revised powertrain options and an improved 8.7 inches of ground clearance.
Subaru says that even though the new Outback is clearly related to the previous generation models, it "marks a departure in design toward a new, bolder look." We'd go with boring and repeat that Subaru seriously needs to hire some capable designers to convey some beauty and character to the brand's products.
Like its predecessor and nearly any station wagon in the market that want to appear more "off-roadish", the Outback stands out thanks to the customary black body cladding, the higher roof rails and the aluminum decorations plus. Furthermore, ground clearance on the new model has been increased to 8.7 inches which is good news for those that actually use the Outback in the... outback.
Built on an all-new platform, the 2010 Outback sits on a 2.8 inch longer wheelbase, now 107.9 inches, while its also four inches taller and two inches wider than the previous model. However, due to the shorter front and rear overhangs, 2010 Outback is almost one inch shorter than its predecessor. Subaru supports that total passenger room is increased by 8 cubic feet, now 105.4 cu. ft., and maximum cargo capacity (with the standard 60/40 split rear seatbacks folded) is up by 6 cubic feet to 71.3 cu. ft.
The 2010MY Outback will be offered in the States with two engines, the revised 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Boxer that delivers 170HP at 5,600 rpm and 170 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm and a new 3.6-liter six-cylinder Boxer producing 256HP and 247 lb.-ft. of peak torque. The 2.5L unit comes with a new standard 6-speed manual transmission, or the available Lineartronic CVT while the 3.6L Boxer is teamed with a 5-speed electronic automatic transmission.
All in all, Subaru offers three different Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive systems in the 2010 Outback line. The 2.5i models with a manual gearbox use a viscous-coupling locking center differential to distribute power 50/50 front to rear while the 2.5i with the CVT makes use of an electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch. As for the range-topping Outback 3.6R, it is fitted with a Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) All-Wheel Drive system that normally sends more power to the rear wheels, continuously adjusting power distribution.
